Council goes green with worm farm
Logan City Council Administration building’s Basement Cafe’s recent innovation to go green has won a prize for Outstanding Intrapreneur in the government sector at the recent Global Intrapreneurs Summit and Awards Ceremony.
Cafe attendant, Danielle Smith, received the award for her efforts in creating a green sustainable model through a range of reduction initiatives across Council, the most recent being the installation of a self-contained worm farm.
Supporting, recognising, and celebrating intrapreneurs globally, the Global Intrapreneurs Summit and Awards celebrates the special breed of employees who think and act like entrepreneurs while working inside an organisation or business.
Homed in a fully portable and self-contained green wheelie bin, the worm farm is helping to reduce Council’s carbon footprint and is diverting up to 80 per cent of the café’s organic food waste from landfills.

Danielle has also led the Basement Café team to implement several additional initiatives aimed at reducing councils carbon footprint, including:
- moving entirely from plastic to cardboard for food storage, food displays and cutlery
- introducing green refillable and china return cups for coffee and tea takeaways
- cutting burger boxes in half to double usage and reduce waste
- introducing local supply chains
- donating soft plastics (including milk cartons, milk lids and bread tags) to local schools for arts and crafts projects.
