Packed program for Australian Heritage Festival

Shared heritage stories help shape families

Talks, workshops and hands-on activities will help mark the 2023 Australian Heritage Festival in the City of Logan

Logan Libraries, Mayes Cottage and the Kingston Butter Factory (KBF) Cultural Precinct will hold events in April and May to celebrate the National Trust of
Australia-run festival.

The theme is Shared Stories.

Logan Libraries’ Local Heritage Specialist Dr Hilda Maclean will discuss how to produce family stories in a workshop from 10.30am to 11.30am on Wednesday,
April 19 at Logan Central Library.

Author Caylie Jeffery, in partnership with the Queensland Writers Centre, will present a legacy storytelling session from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, May 13 at KBF.

Ms Jeffery will discuss how old letters, photographs and keepsakes can be used to capture stories and memories.

Visitors to KBF can also experience the stories of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in the First Nation’s exhibition space in the Living Museum of Logan.

Dr Maclean will also share more about the City of Logan’s pioneering families, such as the Mayes family, through the 150 Years of Scrubby Creek discussion from 12.30pm to 1.30pm on Saturday, May 20 at Mayes Cottage.

In 1873, the Mayes family settled on 321 acres of land in the area that was later to become Kingston.

City Lifestyle Chair Councillor Laurie Koranski said preserving family stories opened a window to the past and captured the heritage of a community.

“Creating a legacy like this for your family will help them better know the stories that shaped them,” Cr Koranski said.

“I encourage those interested in family history to book into some of the wonderful sessions on offer during the Australian Heritage Festival.”

Bookings for all events can be made online at Heritage – Logan City Council Libraries (loganlibraries.org)
