Healing through sound in Underwood

When Marilyn Sophia isn’t helping animals as a veterinary surgeon in Slacks Creek, she’s helping the community heal with quartz crystal and a rainstick.

Sound baths are the latest trend in self-care, where participants lay flat, close their eyes and clear their thoughts to the dulcet tones of quartz crystal singing bowls.

Known as a stepping stone to meditation, which can reduce stress and improve mood, these sessions have become increasingly popular in the City of Logan.

Marilyn, a sound healing practitioner and yogi, says different frequencies resonate with different parts of the body.

‘You’ll experience the vibrations of sound in the eardrums resonating close to the vagus nerve affecting our rest and relaxation system, the parasympathetic nervous system,’ she says.

‘The vibrations that fill the room also physically affect you and can help you feel more relaxed.

‘I found that sound baths really benefited me when dealing with stress related to my vet job, so I wanted to share this with other people.’

These one-hour sound baths are now held monthly at Underwood’s Inna Essence, where Marilyn acts as the guide to finding stillness.

At these sessions, she found that many even struggle to lie still.

Meanwhile, others are so relaxed that they eventually doze off in the dimly lit studio.

‘People just love it and I often hear people saying they wish they were at home in their own bed already because they’re so relaxed,’ she says.

‘It’s an easy way to drop into a meditative state because you don’t have to do anything yourself, you can just lie there and receive, reset and restore.’

Marilyn recommends a sound bath to anyone looking for a little relaxation in their lives.

‘You don’t need to have any prior experience or knowledge – consider it a gift back to yourself,’ she says.

‘We’re also centrally located in Logan, which people have really appreciated because many sound immersion providers are closer to the city.’
