Council adopts new committee structure to drive 50-year vision

Logan City Council has adopted a new structure for its Standing Committees to support its long-term vision for the city, Logan 2075.

Mayor Jon Raven says the refreshed committees will help Councillors and staff stay focused on delivering the city’s 50-year goals.

‘We’ve set our sights on some ambitious long-term goals to push the city forward purposefully,’ Mayor Raven says.

‘We’re now starting to build those goals into our day-to-day work at Council, so they become second-nature in our thinking and doing.

‘Our committees meet monthly to discuss and debate the programs and services we deliver, so it makes sense to align their names and focus areas with Logan 2075.’

The new Standing Committees are:

• Governance and Transformation Committee (chaired by Cr Paul Jackson)
• City Shape, Economic Transformation & Transport Committee (chaired by Cr Scott Bannan)
• Water, Waste & Energy, Natural Areas Committee (chaired by Cr Miriam Stemp)
• Thriving Community Committee (chaired by Cr Mindy Russell)

The new Standing Committee chairs had the following to say:

Governance and Transformation Committee Chair Cr Paul Jackson says: ‘The Governance and Transformation Committee is integral to Council’s decision-making, providing oversight and leadership to ensure the organisation operates effectively and delivers high standards of customer service.’

City Shape, Economic Transformation & Transport Committee Chair Cr Scott Bannan, also Deputy Mayor, says: ‘Transport, growth management, economic development and tourism are the important things we need to stay on top of as Logan’s population soars and we’ll do that through the City Shape, Economic Transformation & Transport Committee.’

Water, Waste & Energy, Natural Areas Committee Chair Cr Miriam Stemp says: ‘The Water, Waste & Energy, Natural Areas Committee will oversee essential water services, our local environment, waste and recycling management and amazing parks, so that we continue to be a sustainable city into the future.’

Thriving Community Committee Chair Cr Mindy Russell says: ‘Building a vibrant city is more than just infrastructure, it’s about the people who live here and their experiences. The Thriving Community Committee helps create a city where people and their interactions are the focus.’

The new committees met for the first time in June and recommendations were presented to the next Ordinary Council meeting for endorsement.

Council endorsed the Logan 2075 vision in April.

Work to develop a set of streamlined, aspirational strategies – delivered in 10-year blocks – will soon begin.
