Bath bliss inspires home-based business
Great ideas can come at any time, and for Caroline Woodman it was while soaking in a bath.
She was facing a watershed moment that included a milestone birthday, the prospect of becoming a grandmother and the unknowns of a voluntary redundancy.
“I retreated to a bath,” Caroline says. “It’s the one place I go for privacy, to breathe, relax and find perspective. A few drops of essential oil and some calming music, and I realised I’d never felt better. I thought, if I can be on a natural high while facing what it’s front of me, there must be something to it.”
That moment led to the creation of BathCalm, a unique home-based business in Yarrabilba. Caroline now hand-crafts a range of bath salts, soaps and essential oils, each paired with specially created music and a guided meditation.
Like all first-time business owners, Caroline understood she had a steep learning curve ahead of her. One of the first things she did was contact Logan City Council.
“I signed up for every workshop available, free and low cost, and the information was invaluable,” she says.
“I couldn’t have done it without that support. I would not have had the confidence to go forward. I needed the information quickly and I got it. That’s what made it so valuable.”

While Caroline works part-time to supplement her business, BathCalm is her passion and her future. She says the business has turned the corner after a tough 18 months through the pandemic.
“We’re now selling direct to resorts and retreats, and the feedback has been amazing.”
Logan Office of Economic Development is hosting a series of ‘How to start a home-based business’ workshops across Logan until June 2022. The sessions explain the fundamentals and provide invaluable tools including a check-list and action plan.
