Young voices centre stage at Youth Shine

Logan’s young people took centre stage recently to mark Queensland Youth Week at the annual Youth Shine celebration in Rowan Park, Slacks Creek.

The free event brought together youth aged 12–25, offering a safe, inclusive space where they could express themselves, meet others, and celebrate their many contributions to the Logan community.

Local performers and young artists took to the stage to showcase their talents, while interactive sessions inspired participation, learning and personal growth.

Lutheran Services’ Bridges Reconnect was there on the day, joining community groups to help local youth celebrate.

Bridges Reconnect Team Leader Tina Tarawhiti says Youth Shine embodies everything Queensland Youth Week stands for — empowerment, connection, and community.

‘Youth Shine reminds us how vital our young people are to Logan’s heart and future,’ Tina says.

‘The annual youth-led event is all about celebrating the achievements of young people in Logan and creating a space where they feel seen, heard and valued.

‘It’s more than just a fun day; it’s a chance to promote positive mental health and wellbeing by fostering a sense of belonging.

‘When young people come together from all walks of life, it builds social inclusion, strengthens community ties, and helps develop confidence and resilience.’

Tina says the event was overwhelmingly positive, with strong support from young people, families and the broader community.

‘The response to this year’s event was incredible with more than 500 people attending,’ Tina says.

‘As a youth-led event, Youth Shine is a great example of what can be achieved when young people are empowered.’

With support from a grant received from Queensland Government (Office for Youth) in partnership with the Queensland Mental Health Commission, Bridges Reconnect hosted a stall offering youth-focused activities, a popcorn machine and information about its services.

‘We see firsthand the challenges many young people in our community are facing, which is why services like Bridges Reconnect play such an important role in supporting both young people and their families,’ Tina explains.

‘Bridges Reconnect provides programs for Logan youth aged 12 to 18 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and provides early intervention initiatives to foster more positive relationships with their family and the community.

‘We support around 85 young people every year who may be disengaged from school or experiencing conflict with friends and family, providing tailored services to help them continue education, gain employment and rebuild relationships.’

Based in Woodridge at 100 Railway Parade, Bridges Reconnect is a not-for-profit community support service provided by Lutheran Services with funding from the Federal Government.
