More than a snag: Greenbank BBQ legend

The Greenbank Giants AFC may be one of Logan’s newer sporting clubs, but it has quickly built a reputation for something bigger than football – community.

That spirit was recently highlighted when volunteer Brooke Hambleton was recognised as one of Australia’s local ‘BBQ legends’ in Bunnings’ Legend of the Tongs competition.

The national initiative celebrates the volunteers who help grassroots AFL and AFLW clubs thrive behind the scenes, one snag at a time.

Since the Greenbank Giants were established 3 years ago, volunteers have played a crucial role in creating opportunities for local young people to get involved in AFL while fostering a strong sense of belonging for families.

From coaches and team managers to canteen helpers and committee members, the club relies on the AFL community who generously give their time to support players both on and off the field.

Brooke has played a key role in helping grow the club. She first became involved when her son joined, and she now supports him in the under 15s team while volunteering wherever needed.

While she is best known for running the barbecue on game days, the club says Brooke embodies the club’s ‘all hands-on deck’ spirit, arriving early, staying late and always helping with a smile.

From celebrating the Giants’ 2024 grand final victory to supporting young players and families each week, her dedication and positivity have made her a valued part of the club community.

Brooke is now in the running for the competition’s major prize, which includes a trip to the Toyota AFL Grand Final and the chance to be crowned the national ‘Legend of the Golden Tongs’.

The overall winner will also secure $25,000 worth of products and materials for their club.
